Highly Rated to Underrated: The Atlanta Braves’ Starting Rotation

Posted: 2nd April 2010 by Benjamin upchurch in MLB
During the entire offseason, the Braves rotation has been touted as one of the most solid in baseball. In the past couple of weeks, though, they have been excluded from many top lists. MLB.com picked the Phillies to have the top rotation in the NL East. The Boston Globe's Tony Massarotti picked the Cardinals, Phillies, and Giants over the Braves in the NL. These are just a couple of examples. It has ...

Consistency: The Reason Fred McGriff Is Overlooked

Posted: 6th January 2010 by Benjamin upchurch in MLB
Fred McGriff Did not have a Flashy Career. áHe really never had that year that stood out from his average production. áThere wasn't a mid career slump nor a second half revival. Instead year after year, team after team he produced like clock work. The big complaint was that he wasn't a headliner in his time. áHere's something for the BBWAA, Hank Aaron made it into Sports Illustrated only three times ...

Worthy or Not: 2010 Hall of Fame Ballot

I'm not predicting who is getting into the HOF. I'm just giving my opinion on who deserves it or not. Let us remember though how hard it is just to get on the ballot it self. So even if I believe they are not HOF worthy that does not mean they were not great ball players. For Reference Major Hitting Milestones 500 HR 3000 Hits 1600 RBI Major Pitching Milestones Starters 4000 IP 3000 K 300 ...

Chavez For Soriano: Maybe a Second Or Third Look Is Needed

Posted: 10th December 2009 by Benjamin upchurch in MLB
On my initial look at the Soriano/Chavez trade I nearly punched a hole in my wall. Comparing Chavez to Soriano major stats in 2009 is extremely one sided. Soriano had a outstanding year 2.97(ERA)/102(K)/1.06(WHIP). Chavez had a decent year for a first year reliever 4.01(ERA)/47(K)/1.35(WHIP). Chavez has also shown a weakness for RH batters. Why would the braves trade a highly rated veteran for a unknown? áMaybe a second look will help answer ...

Could Carlos Lee Be an Atlanta Braves Trade Target?

Posted: 8th December 2009 by Benjamin upchurch in MLB
The Braves have probably the deepest pitching staff in baseball. With six solid starters, two solid setup men, and two closers, Frank Wren has plenty of pieces to play with. The Braves could easily use any of this to trade for a bat that they need. Carlos Lee is everything the Braves would need in a big RBI-producing bat. .300/26(HR)/102(RBI) are numbers that the Braves would love to have on the roster. ...
It is surprising how one minute you're considered a genius and another minute a fool. Frank Wren has already at the very beginning pulled off two sensational signings. Yet Rafael Soriano's consideration for the offer of arbitration has everyone second-guessing. "How could Wren sign those aging pitchers?" "How's he going to get a bat if Soriano ties up $7 million?" First off, relief pitchers can easily go into their mid to late 40s.  This ...
