This was a matchup between the worst scoring team in the NHL, the Boston Bruins, and the best scoring team in the NHL, the Washington Capitals. The better scoring team came away with the victory. Brooks Laich put home the winning goal in overtime. The game winner occurred on a Capitals power play less than one minute into the extra frame. Bruins defenseman Dennis Wideman was called for high-sticking. Nicklas Backstrom got the first goal of the game for the Capitals at 07:36 in the first period. Backstrom received a cross ice pass from Alexander Ovechkin and beat Rask with a snap shot from the right slot.
