The current uncapped year holds with it many quirks including the by now well known massive rise in restricted free agents. Another trick of this unusual offseason is the final-eight rule. This rule allows that the five thru eight teams (among which San Diego falls) can only sign sign one player with a salary of $4,925,000 or more and any number of players with a first-year salary of no more than $3,275,000 and an annual increase of no more than 30 percent in the following years. Rather than trying to refine the salary confines, for the sake of this piece it will be simply associated as follows: one big-ticket free agent.
