By this time in any given NFL season, oddsmakers work extra hard to make handicapping more of a challenge, catching on to the seasonÆs trends, whoÆs hot and whoÆs not, and even factoring in public sentiment when assigning point spreads.

But sometimes the matchups still make the points irrelevant.

For example, oddsmakers know astute bettors will jump all over the San Diego Chargers, who play host to the hapless Oakland Raiders today. In order to sway bettors, oddsmakers have assigned one of the biggest spreads of the season, and are giving the Raiders 16 1/2 points.

A double-digit spread that high in an NFL game many times wonÆt be covered by the favorite. Although I would normally take those points, itÆs probably still not high enough for a Chargers team expected ...
