About an hour and change after the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched a postseason birth, the St. Louis Cardinals decided to follow suit. The Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 6-3 in a potential first-round preview. The win gave the Cardinals their eighth playoff appearance in 14 years in under Tony LaRussa. There were a lot of factors that win into the Cardinals clinching a playoff spotùAlbert PujolsÆ MVP season, the trades for Matt Holliday, and Mark DeRosa or the emergence of Adam Wainwright. For me, the most important factor was Chris Carpenter staying relatively healthy. Carpenter is 16-4 this season with a 2.30 ERA and a ridiculous 1.01 WHIP. Carpenter has re-established himself as the CardinalsÆ ace and is once again looking to win the NL Cy Young award. ...
