MLB Power Rankings, Week 3: Yankees Still on Top, Astros Out of Cellar
Posted: 19th April 2010 by Taylor Smith in MLB
While the Yankees and Rays have each gotten off to hot 9-3 starts to the season, the Red Sox, expected by many to be atop the division when the dust settles, have sputtered out of the gate.
Out West, the A's and Giants continue to win with great pitching, while none of the remaining seven teams in those divisions has a record better than .500.
As we head into the third week ...
No one wants to be that guy.
No one wants to be the person who claims that a team lost because of an umpire or an official. It comes across as a petty excuse for a team not getting the job done.
To be fair, the Rockies offense did not score enough runs to win most Major League Baseball games; However, that that does not excuse two incredibly poor calls in ...
2010 MLB: Are Hitters Like Vernon Wells Off to Hot Starts Real or Fake?
Posted: 19th April 2010 by Joe Regan in MLB
A great start can do wonders for a player.
For some, it is the fulfillment of hard work, whether it be a new workout regiment, a changed approach at the plate, or new found work ethic in the field.
For others, it is merely a flash in the pan, a one or two week hot streak where the player goes right back to being the man we expected as the season ...
Ervin Santana just went and messed with everyone’s head in fantasy baseball. After two very subpar outings in the beginning of the year, Santana went the distance today allowing just one run and fanning six, giving up just four hits.
So what can you expect from Santana for the rest of the season? In 2008, he was one of the better pitchers in the American League and in 2009 he was ...
Jerry Manuel Needs to Go: A Reason the Mets Manager Must Be Fired
Posted: 18th April 2010 by Dan Weil in MLB
Jerry Manuel needs to go.
Let me preface this by saying I will miss him dearly. His post-game sound bites are tremendously amusing. I feel this way because I am a Yankees fan who has to listen to Joe Girardi be his vague self everyday.
Manuel will be missed in that regard, but from a baseball standpoint he will not.
At around 8:30 last night I decided to move on to something else, ...
New York Mets-St. Louis Cardinals: Adam Wainwright Goes the Distance in Win
Posted: 18th April 2010 by Derek Coffelt in MLB
He was just the remedy the St. Louis Cardinals needed after the 20-inning marathon loss against the New York Mets on Saturday.
Adam Wainwright pitched a complete game in a 5-3 victory on Sunday to improve to three wins on the season.
Combined with pitching 24 innings coupled with 22 strikeouts, he's certainly on track to improve on his 2009 campaign and to win yet another Cy Young Award.
However, caution does need ...
St. Louis Cardinals: Adam Wainwright Saves Cardinals, Bullpen
Posted: 18th April 2010 by Cole Claybourn in MLB
It wasn’t certain what we’d get from the Cardinals and Mets on Sunday night. After all, they did just finish a 20-inning game the night before.
Of course, the players were going to be tired, relievers overworked from the night before and everyone else pretty much mentally exhausted from six hour and 53 minute marathon.
One big question was going to be about the availability of the relievers on both sides, as ...
Is Switch-Hitting Chipper Jones’ Left-Handed Swing Deteriorating?
Posted: 18th April 2010 by Ben Duronio in MLB
Chipper Jones is naturally right-handed. A switch-hitter, he learned to bat from the left side because he loved to emulate the Dodgers lineup as a child, and learned to take swings from the other side of the plate.
Jones has stated in the past that his left-handed swing takes a lot more work to keep steady than his right-handed swing. He has many more moving parts from the left side, and despite having ...
Managing Plays the Lead in Mets’ 20-Inning, 2-1 Victory Over St. Louis
Posted: 18th April 2010 by Sam Blum in MLB
Yesterday at Busch Stadium will be a day that will go down in baseball history. It was truly remarkable that a game in this era of baseball goes a full 18 innings without a run crossing home.
However, the story of last night's game was not dictated by the hitting, pitching, running, or fielding; it was the managing. And you better believe that there were a lot of questionable moves.
Whenever a ...
The beginning of every season, in every sport is always full of hope and optimism. It the only time of the seasons when all teams are on a level playing field, and everyone feels as if their team has a chance to go all the way.
It is also a time of numerous opinions, prognostications, and wagers, as to what teams will end up playing in the postseason, and who will ...
