NHL Free Agents: Three NHL Teams With Cap Room and Their Needs

Posted: 5th July 2010 by Mike MacDonald in NHL
The NHL has announced that the salary cap for the 2010-11 season will be $59.4 Million dollars and that each team must spend $43.4 Million (cap floor). It's hard to believe that 23 teams have already spent, at least, the cap floor amount of $43.4 Million dollars. On average, each NHL team has spent roughly $48 Million dollars and have committed salary to 18 players. Teams like Calgary, Philadelphia, Vancouver and Pittsburgh have ...
While I was surprised to see the Montreal Canadiens move Jaroslav Halak before the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles, I was not surprised to see him traded to a club that desperately needed goaltending. Montreal GM Pierre Gauthier and his staff made a move to send Halak to the St. Louis Blues in return for Lars Eller and Ian Schultz. While most Habs fans are livid with Gauthier ...

Mock Drafts, think of them what you'd like, but every NHL GM and their staff are constantly pouring over information to formulate their own outlook on the upcoming draft. Scenario after scenario is being applied and back up plans and potential trade offers are being considered. This is where the GM leans on his staff. This is where the thought process changes from potential to actual. Here's where we see ...

Who Are the Real Players in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft?

Legendary College Basketball coach Bobby Knight is known for a lot of things. Mostly throwing chairs and yelling at players, but Mr. Knight has a real cool saying. And I quote... "Most people have the will to win, few have the will to prepare to win." Welcome to the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Two weeks from today the NHL will gather and select yet another bumper crop of prospects, make trades, lay the ...

With 16 clubs making it to the NHL Playoffs, lets not forget our friends who didn't make the party. Out of the 14 remaining teams, their draft order is set. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames can sit on the sidelines and watch as the Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes, respectfully, have their first round draft choice in hand while they're in competition for Lord Stanley's Mug. There is always ...

Year of the Upset: Round One of the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

Posted: 13th April 2010 by Mike MacDonald in NHL
This might be the year of the upset in the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.   Or not.   It came right down to the wire with some teams just getting into the playoffs. See the Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens. As for teams like Washington and San Jose, just to name a few, they have been looking forward to this for more than a month now.   So, do some teams overlook their opponent at ...

Does the NHL Really Need Divisions Any More?

Posted: 5th March 2010 by Mike MacDonald in NHL
The NHL has changed so much in the recent years.   A majority of the rules have been changed, some teams have changed logos, as well as jersey styles, and don't forget the equipment changes, too. The “composite stick,” the “trapezoid” and “lower or upper body injuries” have become the new common phrases.   Why not change the NHL Divisional alignment? Actually why not do away with divisions completely.   What?   Since the NHL changed it's ...

Why Alex Ovechkin is Not Ready to Be the Washington Capitals’ Captain.

Posted: 27th February 2010 by Mike MacDonald in NHL
When Alex Ovechkin became the new captain of the Washington Capitals, it didn't surprise me at all. It's not a new concept to name your best player your captain. á I will never know how good of a captain he is to his teammates or to his coaches, but I feel that if the powers-that-be didn't feel Alex Ovechkin wasn't up to the task, they wouldn't do anything to embarrass him. ...
With the March trade deadline quickly coming upon us, every NHL team will be looking to do one thing at the deadline: improve their club. Some clubs will have the luxury of looking for that "missing piece" or that "veteran player" they believe will strengthen their club during the grueling Stanley Cup playoff run. There are, however, a few teams that will be looking towards next year and will be looking to ...
