Do Da Dirty Bird: Previewing Week Three, Falcons @ Patriots
Posted: 24th September 2009 by John McCurdy in NFL
Sept. 27, 2009, the date of my Atlanta Falcons' game against the New England Patriots in Foxboro, Massachusetts, was staring me down across time. But a funny thing happened on the way to the Dirty Birds meeting the perennial powerhouse.
I started believing we could win this game. Whether our offense really is improved from last season or Bill Belichick's group really has lost its edge, NE being favored by three-and-a-half is ...
Black & Gold Xs & Os: New Orleans Saints Offensive Gameplan vs. Buffalo
Posted: 24th September 2009 by Will Osgood in NFL
On Sunday afternoon in Buffalo, New York, the New Orleans Saints offense will face a different defense than they've seen the past two weeks. They'll see a defense that relies a lot on speed and physicality, keeps their package relatively simple—although not as simple as their offense—and just flat-out executes.
Of course the Saints offense is a model of precision and execution. They too rely more on execution than flare. They ...
Wayne Gretzky Resigns As Coyotes Coach: The NHL Should Be Ashamed
Posted: 24th September 2009 by Matt Hutter in NHL
Just when you thought the Phoenix Coyotes' saga couldn't get any more embarrassing, it does.
Wayne Gretzky announced his resignation as head coach of the Coyote's today citing his realization that, regardless of who's hands the franchise falls into, he is not part of its future.
What an absolute shame this is.
As a coach, Gretzky wasn't very successful.
His team never made the playoffs in his four years behind the bench.
However, as a ...
Detroit Lions Roundtable Week Two: Encouragement and Disappointment
Posted: 24th September 2009 by Dean Holden in NFL
Welcome to Week Two of the 2009 Detroit Lions Roundtable.
This week, in addition to Keith Shelton and myself, we have Lions featured columnist Michael Schottey adding his insight on the team's collapse against the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday.
So let's get started with our first question of the week.
Q. The Lions looked like a great team in the first half against the Vikings, and sub-par in the second as they let ...
Atlanta Braves Must Solve the Nationals to Have a Shot at October
Posted: 24th September 2009 by Brett Kettyle in MLB
With 10 games left to go in the 2009 season, the Atlanta Braves are currently four games behind the Colorado Rockies in the hunt for the Wild Card.
To say the least, the 2009 season has been extremely frustrating for Braves fans. Whether it be Bobby Cox’s decisions on bullpen management, Yunel Escobar’s lack of hustle or clutch hitting disappearing for games at a time, the Braves have not played as ...
Redskins Prepare to Keep Lions Tame in Week Three Gut Check
Posted: 24th September 2009 by Matthew Brown in NFL
The Redskins escaped their home opener against the St. Louis Rams with a 1-1 record and a bevy of questions facing their offense, particularly their red zone performance.
Over the course of the game against the Rams, the Redskins moved the ball efficiently between the 20s, recording drives of 83, 64, 74 and 76 yards. But despite their ability to move the ball into scoring position, the Redskins couldn't score.
The previous ...
Freddy Sanchez’s Surgery Cripples San Francisco GM Brian Sabean’s Return
Posted: 24th September 2009 by Kevin O'Brien in MLB
With this being the last year of GM Brian Sabean's contract, owner Bill Neukom is faced with a very tough decision.
Does he stick with the GM who has been at the helm of the Giants' front office since 1997? Or does he go a different route with somebody else calling the shots when it comes to personnel decisions?
As far as I'm concerned, everything Sabean has done (or that has occurred ...
After two weeks, the New York Giants have won two big games within the division at home against Washington and at Dallas’s “Jerry Dome.” Sitting on top of the division, the Giants now prepare for a series of games against Tampa Bay, Kansas City, and Oakland.
Looks like a pretty sweet slate, doesn’t it?
Maybe it isn’t.
Initially, when the opponents were announced I was excited to see who the Giants would face. ...
Who Am I?: Your 2009-10 New York Rangers Season Preview
Posted: 24th September 2009 by Russell McKenzie in NHL
After all the changes and personnel shifting that occurred in this offseason for the New York Rangers organization, the question that needs to be asked is this: Is this team really all that different?
Rangers' general manager Glen Sather seems to be convinced that there is a formula to this. So, it seems he hits a lab, adds a pinch of high-talent winger, some leadership, a great goaltender, some serious snarl, ...
